YouTube and Monetization, Zoe Manalo Post 2

 YouTube and Monetization
 Zoe Manalo, Post 2

What does your YouTube page look like? Is it 5 am get ready with me vlogs? Funny cat videos? Like most social media platforms, it's not just a place to watch and share videos. You can earn money on these platforms. YouTube gets its money through advertising. Those ads you can't skip before and during the best part of the video goes to a creator. Influences and creators joined the YouTube Partner Program which means they can turn ads into revenue. The more views and subscribers, the more chances for ad money. However, monetization is not just ads. There are opportunities to let fans join a membership for exclusive content. Content creators can sponsor companies or products in their videos with affiliated links. But, a question or problem that arises from this is that not all ads are good ads. Some can be harmful to others. YouTube also takes a cut from the ads which could cause emotional tension for creators who love what they do. Do they make content they love that might not get the most views or a big paycheck? Or do they make content that pays? YouTube's monetization system has changed the way we all think about media. It also influences what we share and make based on the platform.

  1. Hi Zoe! I agree with you that ads are everywhere and can be hurtful to the content creators just trying to make some extra money. I just talked about ads on Instagram, I totally forgot how ads pop up in the middle of a YouTube video sometimes at the best part! Do you think this is a gamble for content creators having so many ads, does it make them lose followers by the amount of ads they have in a video?

  2. Zoe, I always wondered whether content creators on YouTube know what ads are playing while their viewers watch their content. Do they get a say? Does YouTube assure them that it will be similar to the channel's brand image? Who decides whether its an ad you can skip after a few seconds or an ad that you have to watch all the way through? Honestly, I'm not on YouTube often (only for Yoga with Adriene videos lol) but I am grateful for it when I need it!
