A decline in my social media presence
I do, like many people these days, go on a number of social media sites and applications. In order to look at content, one must set up an account. And for some reason or another, a fair amount of people is willing to pay for exclusive content on platforms such as Twitter. Even so, I have not posted anything on Twitter in the nearly 12 years I have logged on to the site. These reasons are both personal and obvious.
I have, though, posted and continue to post at times on Facebook. In a few instances, I even posted YouTube videos of myself commenting on social political matters. Not a lot of people viewed them. More people have viewed and commented on my Facebook account. Just to let it be known, it is not a public account since I limit the access to people who I have as friends on Facebook. Yet, over the past 11 years, I have written and/or did a video on a number of matters both in the personal field and in the observations of the world in which we live in. Recently though, my input has been lessened. This is, in at least some form or other, a result of me being a full-time graduate student. Having said that, the changes have also come from the social political beliefs of others I encounter on Facebook.
To explain, I am someone that is a registered Democrat, having voted since turning 18 and making a commitment to vote on each and every Election Day. Needless to say, I voted strictly Democrat last year and was saddened to see a number of nominees I voted for and supported lose. Sometime after the 2024 election, I had made a post detailing my frustrations over what has been the results of what I presume is a rightward shift in American society with a combined sense of being quite vocal of one's lack of policy education and understanding of ethics. It was quite a bit of text and even finished with a YouTube link of a noted anti-war song which I cannot remember what I posted. And why I cannot remember much of what I posted is due to surrounding criticism of the post by a number of people that I am Facebook Friends with which includes some extended family. After my immediate family got a chance to look, it was advised that I delete the post. Which is what happened, and it was not the first time such a recommendation of deletion of a post occurred. You might have noticed this too, in that social media accounts are now about 65% conservative and reactionary oriented among personal accounts. Every so often a post will remark about anything related to a celebrity such as Taylor Swift (FYI, I have yet to hear the new album, but I trust it will be interesting.) Mostly though it is memes and complaints and links that are nearly all related to the new right. And as a result of the killing of Charlie Kirk, I think you might be seeing a lot more of that content and perhaps a reverse censorship. In that voices like mine are told to keep quiet about things.
As it is, the recent post I made on Facebook that is kept is sometime after my birthday when I acknowledge the well wishes of family and friends and mentioned my status as a graduate student. I have not, though, deleted my account. For I am hopeful that I can write something which will make others think in a different way. Perhaps you might be having some of these situations come into account as well. Let me know in the comments if this is unique to me or if there are other stories like this to tell.
I would also like to thank my fellow classmates that commented on my previous post. It is actually pleasing to hear that others are aware of what I had written about and share similar traits of what they like. So, thanks again.
More to come next week,
Robert Kelly
